The European Capital of Culture is a city designated by the European Union for a period of one year during which she is given the chance to showcase its cultural life and cultural development. Several European cities have used the year the cultural city to completely transform their cultural base and, by extension, their image internationally.
The concept of European cultural city arrested as a way alliloprosengisis European residents and launched on 13 June 1985 by the Council of Ministers on the initiative of the Greek Minister of Culture Melina Mercouri. Since then, the initiative has become more and more successful amongst European residents and has acquired a growing cultural and socio-economic impact on the numerous visitors it has attracted.

The European Capitals of Culture initiative is designed to:
  • Highlight the richness and diversity of cultures in Europe;
  • Celebrate the cultural features Europeans share;
  • Increase European citizens' sense of belonging to a common cultural area;
  • Foster the contribution of culture to the development of cities.
In addition to this, experience has shown that the event is an excellent opportunity for:
  • Regenerating cities;
  • Raising the international profile of cities;
  • Enhancing the image of cities in the eyes of their own inhabitants;
  • Breathing new life into a city's culture;
  • Boosting tourism.
First European cultural city was named Athens in 1985.
Many important cities of Greece (Elefsina, Kalamata, Tripoli, Sparta, Nafplio, Ioannina, Larissa ...) announced their candidacy for the year 2021, among them Delphi.
 I wish to all the candidate cities Good Luck!

Wednesday 18/11/2015, Delphi.
In Delphi, at the - so called - center of the world under a sun that irritates the eyes and the mind, the Women's Cultural Association of Delphi "Eva" declares its support to the candidacy of Delphi as European Cultural Capital of the year 2021.
For this reason I join forces with them as seen in the following photo.

The Cultural Association of Women of Delphi "Eva" borrowed its name from Eva Palmer - Sikelianos, wife of Angelos Sikelianos, with whom he organized the "Delphic Festival" - art, theatre and music in Delphi during the years 1927 and 1930. The pair supported the consolidation of world peace and harmony through the promotion of basic human values, which form the heart of the Delphic Idea.

A few words...
Eva Palmer - Sikelianos (GreekΕύα Πάλμερ - Σικελιανού; January 9, 1874 – June 4, 1952) was an American woman notable for her study and promotion of Classical Greek culture, weaving, theater, choral dance and music. Palmer's life and artistic endeavors intersected with numerous noteworthy artists throughout her life.
She was both inspired by or inspired the likes of dancers Isadora Duncan and Ted Shawn, the French literary great Colette, the poet and author Natalie Barney and the actress Sarah Bernhardt. She would go on to marry Angelos Sikelianos, a Greek poet and playwright. Together they organized a revival of the Delphic Festival in Delphi, Greece. Embodied in these festivals of art, music and theater she hoped to promote a balanced sense of enlightenment that would further the goals of peace and harmony in Greece and beyond.

The Museum of Delphic Festivals, Angelos and Eva Sikelianos, as it is its full title, it was founded to house the vision of the great poet. The purpose of his life, as it evolved, Angelos Sikelianos, was the Delphic Idea, as he had conceived it: a blend of ancient theatrical tradition of Byzantine music and folk art in a festival that will take place at the sacred site of Delphi which would be called “Delphic Festivals”.
Indeed, twice, in 1927 and 1930, Angelos Sikelianos and his wife Eva Palmer managed to organize it. Ancient tragedies were played in the theater of the Oracle of Delphi, Byzantine music concerts took place and exhibitions of folklore held alongside. Crowds and intellectuals of the time attended the events and praised the effort. The economic exhaustion of the pair but the inability of the Greek state to support their vision marked the end.
Today, the old home of Angelos and Eva Sikelianos houses the Museum of Delphic Festivals. It is a large stone building with arched windows, among green trees. It was built during the First Delphic Festivals, under the supervision of Eva Palmer – Sikelianos by local artisans, very close to the archaeological site. In the halls of the Museum of Delphic Festivals, the visitor can admire many photographs of the events but also the preparation, costumes from the performances and other objects. You might even see the loom Eva Palmer – Sikelianos, in which she had woven some of the costumes of the performances. The Museum of Delphic Festivals hosts even manuscripts and objects of Angelos Sikelianos.
Be free to visit it every Saturday 9 am to 2.00 pm at the city of Delphi, Greece (Athens Time).
